It’s hard to believe that summer is just about over and September is here… It’s been a crazy year at the record store. We’ve seen tons of great records coming through the shop, and we’ve had some amazing picks for our Record of the Month Club so far in 2019. September is no exception!ย

This month Record of the Month Club Members will be getting a copy of Luaka Bop’s new release in their ongoing “World Spirituality Classics” series–The Time for Peace is Now: Gospel Music About Us.

The record will be shipping out around September 23rd. If you live in town you can go ahead and swing by the shop to pick up your copy.ย

Ex-Talking Heads frontman, David Byrne, started the Luaka Bop record label back in the 1980s as an outlet for releasing some top-notch Brazilian Tropicalia compilations. The label has gone on to release tons of great records since then, including some of our favorites since we opened in 2012–records by Tim Maia, William Onyeabor, Doug Blunt, Tom Ze, Alice Coltrane, and many more. The Time for Peace is Now seemed like a perfect fit for our ROTM Club. So here it is!

The record is compiled of undeniably soulful, passionate, and urgent songs from obscure 45s, dug up from a long dormancy in attics, sheds and crates across the American south. The songs are a subset of seventies-era gospel, focusing not on Jesus or God, but instead on ourselves, and how we exist with each other.

The record is housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, and features liner notes by author Jonathan Lethem as well as a booklet.
