This past week we had the pleasure of meeting two members of the excellent Hi Rhythm group from Memphis–Archie Turner and Howard Grimes. They were in Oxford playing with their current group The Bo Keys. If you haven’t heard the excellent “On the Loose” vinyl reissue from Fat Possum Records then now is the time.
Hi Rhythm was the backing band for huge acts on the Hi Records label like Al Green and Ann Peebles among tons of other amazing artist. They’re also responsible for one of the coolest album covers of all time (see below).
By the mid-1970s these guys had played on nearly 20 gold and platinum albums and tons of chart buster hits with Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson, Otis Clay, and others.
