Founded in Memphis in 1957 asΒ Satellite Records, the name Stax Records was adopted in 1961. The label was a major factor in the creation of theΒ Southern soulΒ andΒ Memphis soulΒ music styles, also releasingΒ gospel,Β funk,Β jazz, andΒ bluesΒ recordings. Β The label helpedΒ launch the careers of unknowns who would become icons, cranking out a massive catalog of smash soul hits by the likes ofΒ Isaac Hayes,Β Otis Redding,Β the Staple Singers,Β Wilson Pickett,Β Luther Ingram,Β Albert King,Β the Bar-Kays,Β Booker T. & the MG’s,Β Johnnie Taylor,Β Rufus and Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, and dozens of other artists whose influence remains vital in the music of today. On its many and varied labels, Stax Records also recorded such legends asΒ Big Star,Β Rev. Jesse Jackson,Β Bill Cosby,Β Moms Mabley, and the Grammy-winning comedic geniusΒ Richard Pryor.
