2014 is shaping up to be a pretty strong year for new records and some excellent reissues…and it’s only August! These past few weeks we’ve seen some of the strongest releases of the year with new stuff from Ty Segall, J Mascis, New Pornographers, Shovels & Rope, FKA Twigs, Spoon, Twin Peaks, Pallbearer, David Kilgour, and lots, lots more. We figured it’s time to get some perspective on the year as we go into the final quarter, so here’s a list of some of our favorite records (both new and reissued) of the year…so far! Stay tuned for our complete list sometime in January.
Our favorite new LPs of 2014…so far:
–The War on Drugs Lost in the Dream (Secretly Canadian)
–Spoon They Want My Soul (Loma Vista/Republic)
–Angel Olsen Burn Your Fire for No Witness (JagJaguwar)
–Circulatory System Mosaics within Mosaics (Elephant 6/Orange Twin)
–Eno/Hyde High Life (Warp)
–David Kilgour & the Heavy 8’s End Times Undone (Merge)
–Sharon Van Etten Are We There (JagJaguwar)
Some of our favorite reissues of 2014…so far:
–Lewis L’Amour (Light in the Attic)
– The Soul of Designer Records CD Set (Big Legal Mess)
–Rowland S. Howard Pop Crimes (Fat Possum)
–The Clean Anthology Vinyl set (Merge)
–Craig Leon Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music (RVNG)
–Bob Dylan Complete Basement Tapes (we know this isn’t out yet but it’s surely to be one of the best records of the year…we’ll have all 3 versions–6CD, 2CD, 3LP–when it comes out in November!)
…and the most underrated/overlooked record of 2014 so far:
–Twin Peaks Wild Onion (Grand Jury)
We know we’re leaving some great records out, but we still have time to get it right before the year is up…so stay tuned!
